R. Doyle Stulting, M.D., Ph.D.
Director of Corneal Disease & Research
Woolfson Eye Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Doyle Stulting as Director of Corneal Disease & Research. With the addition of Dr. Stulting, Woolfson Eye Institute will take patient care to the next level, further enhancing the strength and expertise of our physician team. Dr. Stulting is a pioneer in corneal disease research and LASIK. His basic research efforts have opened the doors to deeper understanding of the mechanisms of corneal transplant rejection and herpetic ocular disease and to new treatment paradigms. One of the most frequently cited investigators in his field, Dr. Stulting is the author of more than 200 publications and countless other articles based on his extensive clinical research in corneal transplantation, laser treatment of refractive errors, the management of dry eye, and cataract surgery. A sought-after speaker on both refractive surgery and cornea topics, he is also a revered authority for patients with complex problems that generate difficult questions about refractive surgery outcomes. In a career that has spanned more than 30 years, Dr. Stulting has been conducting basic and clinical research in corneal disease, corneal transplantation and refractive surgery. He participated in the first physician-sponsored clinical investigation of LASIK, prior to the refractive laser’s FDA approval in the United States. Dr. Stulting is an experienced surgeon and medical monitor for a clinical trial using a new intraocular telescope for patients with cataract and severe central vision loss from macular degeneration. He is also a leader in the investigation of new laser technologies for the treatment of damaged corneas and Principle Investigator for a clinical trial of a new technology that is likely to revolutionize the management of keratoconus—a disease that today accounts for 20% of the corneal transplants performed in the USA. He has also organized a key multi-center clinical trial to evaluate the effect of tissue typing on corneal transplantation.
