Dry eye syndrome is a chronic lack of adequate lubrication and moisture on the surface of the eye. With dry eye syndrome, the lacrimal gland near the eye doesn’t produce enough tears to keep the eye moist and healthy. Symptoms of dry eye can include scratching, itching, and burning as well as the feeling that something is in the eye. Dry eyes feel very uncomfortable, especially in certain situations such as in an air-conditioned room or after looking at a computer screen for an extended period of time.

Dry eye syndrome may not be completely curable, but the accompanying symptoms can be managed. Some treatments include eye drops, change of lifestyle, and surgery for more serious cases. Temporary or permanent
silicone plugs, called
punctual plugs, can also be inserted in the tear ducts in your eyelids in order to keep tears from draining away as quickly.
