Frequently Asked Questions

What does eye pressure feel like?

It can feel differently from patient to patient. Eye pressure can feel like a stretching sensation behind or inside of the eye. It can also feel as if the eye is full or heavy.

If you experience any of these symptoms, please call Woolfson Eye Institute for a consultation appointment. It’s better to treat your symptoms now before they get worse.

For more information, please visit our glaucoma page.

What causes pressure in or behind the eyes?

Pressure inside of the eyes is part of a disease process called glaucoma. Glaucoma is when the pressure builds up in the eye and that causes gradual decline in the patient’s vision.

When patients have pressure in their eyes, it’s very rare that it would actually be pressure inside the eye. More typically that has to do with pressure around the eyes.

Let us explain.

The eyes are surrounded by a bony structure called the orbit, and surrounding the orbit is the sinuses. You have sinuses below your eyes and above your eyes. So when people feel pressure in their eyes, it is typically pressure in the sinuses surrounding the eyes.

The following list consists of factors that cause or are associated with ocular hypertension (situation when a person feels pressure inside the eye) – they are virtually the same as the causes of glaucoma, as well.

  • Excessive aqueous production: This is the clear fluid produced in the eye. With too much fluid production, a patient will feel pressure in the eye.
  • Inadequate aqueous drainage: If the fluid drains slowly from the eye, this can cause increased eye pressure.
  • Eye trauma
  • Certain medications: Ocular hypertension is a side effect of certain medications (i.e. steroid eye drops, etc).
  • Other eye conditions
  • Race, age, and family history

If you experience any of these symptoms, please call Woolfson Eye Institute for a consultation appointment. It’s better to treat your symptoms now before they get worse.

For more information, please visit our glaucoma page.

How do you choose a LASIK surgeon?

Don’t choose a LASIK surgeon based solely on cost/pricing. You know the saying, “you get what you pay for”? Well that applies here.

Choose a LASIK surgeon with a lot of experience and the right training/credentials. Check out their patient reviews online. Schedule a consultation to make sure you feel comfortable during your experience at the office.

There are a lot more things to consider when choosing the right LASIK surgeon for you or your family!

14 Important Points to Consider before Selecting your LASIK Surgeon

How much does LASIK cost?

While we certainly understand that pricing is a factor in determining whether or not you are able to have LASIK surgery, we put forth every effort to ensure each patient (who is a candidate for LASIK surgery) will be able to pay for it.

We also offer financing options at Woolfson Eye Institute. Your decision should be based on the experience and care you will receive, and not solely on price, but at Woolfson Eye Institute our goal is make LASIK surgery affordable for everyone. In fact, we are able to connect you to financing programs that start as low as $57 per month to cover the cost of your laser eye surgery.

Also, here’s a warning about bargain pricing for LASIK….

You may see offers for LASIK surgery that seem too good to be true. When you see a suspiciously low number, be very wary. This is a frequent tactic used to get people in the door, but may not accurately reflect the true costs associated with the LASIK procedure. LASIK ads are sometimes comparable to commercials advertising satellite TV—the $29/month price in the ad ultimately costs you 3-5 times that number.

Typically, these low numbers do not include essential LASIK surgery costs, such as your pre-operative exam and consultation, as well as post-surgical follow-up care. At Woolfson Eye Institute, our price includes your pre-operative evaluation, at least a full year of post-operative care, lubricant eye drops, and for most patients, the Woolfson Lifetime Assurance Plan.

Blurred vision can be the result of eye diseases and eye conditions such as:

  • nearsightedness (myopia)
  • farsightedness (hyperopia)
  • astigmatism
  • glaucoma
  • dry eyes
  • refractive eye conditions

Do you fix eyelid problems?

Yes we do! Woolfson Eye Institute has oculoplastic doctors who specialize in oculoplastic cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.

The cosmetic surgical procedures focus on upper and lower lid appearance and function, restoring a youthful refreshed appearance without compromising the natural position and closure of the eyes.

Our oculoplastic doctors also restore function and appearance in patients who have had prior unsuccessful cosmetic surgery.
Our doctors have much experience with medical and surgical management of the eyelids and lacrimal (tear) system. We are skilled at reconstructing the periocular (surrounding the eye) area after Mohs surgery for the treatment of skin cancers, as well as cosmetic eyelid surgery, Botox injections and facial fillers.

I was told I’m not a candidate for LASIK. What are my options?

At Woolfson Eye Institute, our commitment to customized vision is why, in addition to LASIK, we offer a variety of other refractive surgery options designed to improve vision problems caused by refractive errors. These alternative treatment options allow us to treat patients who are not good candidates for LASIK.

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is an alternative to LASIK. For individuals with corneal scarring, thin corneas, and other corneal conditions, PRK may be the best treatment option. As with all refractive patients, during your comprehensive evaluation, you will be advised if PRK is the treatment option ideally suited for you to achieve your best vision at any age.

What is the best treatment for dry eye syndrome?

Dry eye disease (DED), is a condition that affects millions of people. It is often a normal part of the aging process and becomes quite common as we get older.

Other causes include exposure to environmental irritants; medications; injuries to the eye; and, certain health conditions, such as diabetes, thyroid deficiencies, autoimmune disorders (i.e., Sjogren’s Syndrome, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus or HIV), Bell’s Palsy and Myasthenia Gravis.

Dry eye disease is literally the eye’s inability to produce an adequate amount of tears or the inability to produce a good quality tear. Strangely enough, some people who have dry eye syndrome actually tear excessively because the quality of the tear is not sufficient to stay on the front surface of the eyes.

Your regular eye doctor may have prescribed one or more of the following treatments for your dry eye symptoms:

  • Artificial tears
  • Long-lasting lubricating gels
  • Ointments at bedtime
  • Temporary or permanent plugging of the tear ducts (“puntum”)
  • Change in medications that can cause dry eye
  • Prescription medication for chronic, moderate to severe dry eye (e.g., Restasis, Xiidra, Cequa)

If you have tried these treatments but are still experiencing Dry Eye Disease symptoms, like burning or gritty sensations, schedule an appointment for a dry eye evaluation at Woolfson Eye Institute.

If you think you have dry eye disease, take our self test!

Can your doctors do a corneal transplant?

Yes we can! Our corneal specialists perform corneal surgery, as well as the following cornea services:

  • Corneal abrasions and scratched cornea treatment
  • Corneal disease treatment
  • Corneal surgery (DSEK)
  • Corneal treatments (surgical and non-surgical options)
  • Corneal ulcers and treatment for eye ulcers
  • Pterygium treatment

At Woolfson Eye Institute we offer a variety of eye surgeries, with our goal being to match each patient with the procedure that is right for them. For more information, or to schedule your appointment, contact our location nearest you.

I have eye floaters? What could be the problem?

A retinal detachment is an emergency because the longer the retina remains detached, the greater the risk of vision loss. A retinal detachment is a very serious problem that almost always causes blindness unless treated.

The typical symptoms of a retinal detachment include floaters, flashing lights, and a shadow or a gray curtain in the peripheral vision that can be stationary or progress toward the center of vision.

If any of these occur, see your ophthalmologist right away. This is a very serious condition that can have a debilitating impact on the rest of your life if emergency treatment is not sought immediately.
