As with any surgery, there are several factors to consider before deciding to undergo LASIK. We like to think of these factors as the 3 Cs–comfort, cost, and consistency. Maybe your decision-making process will be easier after covering these topics:

Comfort

It’s natural to assume that a surgical procedure on your eyes will be uncomfortable or even painful, but that’s not typically the case. Before the procedure begins, your surgeon will administer drops that numb the surface of the eye. You may feel some pressure, but the drops significantly reduce the discomfort. LASIK is considered a minimally invasive procedure, and typically comes with only minor discomfort for a day or two. Prescription drops are used to protect from infection and to reduce inflammation. Lubricant drops are provided to moisten the eyes and to further aid in comfort.

Cost

LASIK is considered an elective procedure, which means that insurance companies don’t provide coverage. The out-of-pocket cost can seem daunting, but there are several options to help make the expense more manageable. Woolfson Eye Institute can refer you to CareCredit, which offers a 24-month, interest-free financing plan. You may also have an FSA or HSA card that’s provided through your health insurance company. LASIK at Woolfson isn’t cheap, but it can be affordable. When you consider what you spend on contacts or glasses each year, and think about how much will you end up spending over the course of your life, it’s reasonable to also consider how a one-time LASIK fee could end up eliminating a lifetime of eyewear expenses.

Consistency of Results

Safety and effectiveness are two of the most researched topics when it comes to LASIK surgery, and it is often hard to know whose information you can trust.
