So, you’re considering LASIK but have some concerns. We totally understand! As with any surgery, there are several factors to consider before deciding to undergo the procedure. With LASIK surgery, we like to think of these factors as the 3 Cs–comfort, cost, and consistency of results. Let’s address these issues in the hopes that your decision-making process becomes a little bit easier:
It’s natural to assume that a surgical procedure on your eyes will be uncomfortable or even painful, but that’s typically not the case. Before the procedure begins, your surgeon will administer drops that numb the surface of the eye. You may feel some pressure, but the drops significantly reduce any real pain you might have otherwise felt. LASIK is minimally invasive and, at most, usually causes no more than mild discomfort for a day or two after the procedure. Prescription drops will be given to you in order to protect and promote healing. Lubricant drops are provided to moisten the eyes and to further alleviate discomfort.
Because LASIK is considered an elective procedure, it is unfortunately not covered by insurance. The out-of-pocket cost can seem daunting, but there are several options to help make the expense more manageable. Woolfson Eye Institute accepts CareCredit, which offers a 12-month, interest-free financing plan. We also accept FSA and HSA cards provided through your insurance company. Even with financing and payment options, we understand that a large up-front cost can be a deterrent and can make LASIK seem like an impossibility, but we ask you to consider this before writing it off. How much do you spend on contacts or glasses each year? How much will you end up spending over the course of your life? In the long run, a one-time LASIK fee could end up eliminating a lifetime of expenses.
Consistency of Results
